As a pretty good masters runner in 1981, John Boyle made a
discovery. Most people that he competed with, had absolutely no interest in
race management, they just wanted to run. Boyle liked both aspects of the
game and decided to stage a benefit race, for a social agency where he
worked. It was a success. One thing led to another, and in a few years, he
was directing about 30 to 40 events and providing services to a few more.
Track meets, pentathlons, skate races, bike rallies, biathlons, cyruthons,
triathlons, duathlons, and road races. Whatever.
Through the years he has served as national Biathlon
Chairman for USAT, Florida State Rep for RRCA,
National Chairman of the Masters Long Distance Running Committee of USATF,
and continues to serve as the Championships Coordinator for the Masters Long
Distance Running Committee of USATF.
He has found time to coach the Cross Country teams at Deland
High School, for about ten years, and has been the Men’s and Women’s Head
Cross Country Coach at
Stetson University, since 1993.
Along the way, he learned the mechanics of timing and
scoring races, and directed the evolution of Alta Vista Sports to specialize
in that service. There now have been over 2000 races, with which he has
been involved from as few as 6 in a 5K to 20,000 in a marathon.
As a masters runner, he has done Boston quite a few times,
with a 2:45 PR at the race made famous by the Salazar/Beardsley duel. Other
Masters PR's were a 16:11 5K, 26:45 5 mile, 56:45 10 mile, a 1:15:35 half
marathon, 1:52.30 30K, and lots of war stories.
Approaching race results from the standpoint of a
competitive athlete, is the Boyle philosophy. This has served the athlete
and the company well.
